Several senior Army officers promoted

Several senior Army officers have been promoted by?President Maithripala Sirisena, as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

The Army said that, in what can be regarded as a New Year bonanza, the President has promoted Brigadier M.A.A.D Sirinaga, Director Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to the rank of Major General.

He has also promoted 66 other Senior Officers to the rank of Colonels and Lieutenant Colonels effective from specific dates, clearing a much – anticipated backlog in their career prospects.

Those promotions have been approved by the President on the recommendations of the Ministry Of Defence and the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake. (Colombo Gazette)

Underworld figure shot at in Grandpass

An underworld figure was shot at in Grandpass today by gunmen who arrived on a motorcycle. The Police said that Mariputthu Ganesan, alias ?Manna Kanna? was shot and injured in Grandpass. The man who was injured in the shooting incident was admitted to hospital for treatment. Ganesan is said to be a key suspect linked to an assault on the father of notorious criminal Kanjipani Imran.
