India told to send official to Sri Lanka to raise fishermen issue

The Indian Union Government should send the External Affairs Secretary to Sri Lanka to ensure the protection of Tamil Nadu fishermen, PMK founder S Ramadoss has said.

In a statement, he said more than 3,000 fishermen of Rameswaram in 500 mechanised boats were fishing in Katchatheevu on Sunday morning when Sri Lankan Navy personnel attacked them, the New Indian Express reported.

“This should be condemned and such incidents should be stopped immediately. Tamil Nadu fishermen cannot venture into the sea if such attacks continued,” he said.

Ramadoss said the Centre should send the External Affairs Secretary to Sri Lanka to put an end to attacks by the island navy.

He also said it should ensure protection of Tamil Nadu fishermen while they are fishing around Katchatheevu island.

Number of coronavirus patients rises

Nine arrested over fake news

Nine persons, including a woman, have been arrested so far on charges of spreading fake news on COVID- 19 via social media. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ajith Rohana said 2 individuals were arrested yesterday in the Angoda and Polgahawela areas. A 35 year- old man was arrested in the Kelanimulla area in Angoda for spreading fake news on the Coronavirus on social media, he said. Navy assists yacht with foreign couple off Galle

The Sri Lanka Navy said that it assisted a foreign couple stranded on a yacht anchored in the seas off Galle. The yacht was stranded due to a technical fault while sailing across the Southern seas. The Navy provided the couple with food and drinking water on a directive issued by the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva and the Commander of the Southern Naval Area Rear Admiral Kassapa Paul.
