Over 180 kg of ganja to be smuggled to Colombo seized in India

Customs officers in Tuticorin, India have seized 181kg of ganja meant to be smuggled to Colombo from Madurai through Tuticorin, the Times of India reported.

The seizure took place late on Thursday. Customs assistant commission Jayabarathi said that the seizure was based on a tipoff and that the value of the contraband substance was Rs 27 lakh.

Officials said that they got a tip off that ganja was being smuggled to Tuticorin in a lorry on a route close to the sea through Ramanathapuram or Tuticorin districts. Around 10 officers who were engaged in vehicle checks spotted a truck that tried to evade the check.

The driver and cleaner abandoned the vehicle and escaped. On checking the vehicle the officials found six polythene bags in a compartment below the lorry’s platform with dry ganja leaves.

They have seized the contraband and the truck (bearing registration number TN 20 AV 0615).

This seizure was brought to the customs division in Tuticorin for action to be taken under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. A search was on for the driver and cleaner of the vehicle. Inquiries were under way to ascertain the source of the drugs and the network.
