UNP considers ‘National Government” to expand cabinet

The United National Party (UNP) is considering forming a ‘National Government’ to expand the cabinet, Minister Vajira Abeywardana said today.

Abeywardana said that while only a few Ministers were appointed today, more will be appointed soon.

He said that the UNP is considering forming a ‘National Government’ with its alliance partners to expand the cabinet.

According to the Constitution the cabinet must be limited to 30 but can be expanded if a National Government is formed.

The United National Front (UNF) had formed a National Government with the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in 2015.

However the UPFA withdrew from the National Government last October.

Abeywardana said that the UNP is now considering forming a National Government with some of its alliance partners in the UNF. (Colombo Gazette)
