Sirisena says no to Ranil, talks end in failure

President Maithripala Sirisena has refused to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister resulting in talks between the President and the United National Front (UNF) ending in failure, UNF Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said.

The President met the UNF for talks today, the second meeting between the President and UNF since Friday.

However UNF Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said that the talks ended in failure after the President insisted he will not appoint Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister.

Prior to meeting the UNF the President had talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

Party leaders of the United National Front had decided earlier today that they will support UNF leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to be reappointed as Prime Minister.

The UNF party leaders met this morning to discuss the political crisis in the country.

At the meeting the UNF leaders were unanimous in their support for Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister.

They had decided they will reiterate the stand to President Maithripala Sirisena at the meeting this evening. (Colombo Gazette)
