Sri Lanka says Indian trawler sank after collision with Navy ship

An Indian fishing trawler had sunk, south of Delft Island at 1815 hours on 28 November when it collided with a Sri Lanka Naval ship, the Foreign Ministry said today.

The Foreign Ministry said the incident happened while the Sri Lanka Navy was escorting approximately 30 Indian fishing trawlers that had been poaching within Sri Lankan waters.

The collision with Sri Lanka Naval ship Edithara II had occurred due to the aggressive maneuvering of the trawlers and the poor visibility that prevailed at the time of the incident.

The Sri Lanka Navy had rescued the 4-member crew and some of the items on board.

The rescued crew along with the items will be produced to the Kankesanthurei Police station for further legal action. (Colombo Gazette)
