Sanath Jayasuriya , Sri Lankan cricket legend and World Cup winner, has been accused of smuggling ‘rotten betel nuts’ into India, India Today reported.
According to media reports, a businessman named Jayasuriya and two other cricketers (whose names were not revealed) after the Director of Revenue Intelligence seized betel nuts worth several crores of rupees in Nagpur.
The businessman was interrogated by the Director of Revenue Intelligence and that was when he named Jayasuriya.
Jayasuriya has meanwhile denied the allegations. Jayasuriya tweeted saying he has instructed his lawyers to respond to the false allegations.
“This is absolutely false and I have never been involved in any business activity dealing with Betel Nut. I completely deny the contents of the article and my lawyers have already responded to this defamatory and false article,” Jayasuriya said. (Colombo Gazette)
