Citizens movement protests against behaviour of MPs

A citizens movement staged a protest at Independence Square today against the behaviour of Parliamentarians in Parliament last week.

The ‘Rise Up Sri Lanka’ protest saw several people comment and express outrage at the manner in which some MPs behaved in Parliament last week.

“Sri Lankan democracy has reached its darkest hour. We like to remind you that this is not the first time that we have been let down by our political leadership. Rise Up Sri Lanka was born from the desire to channel our emotions and principles towards constructive action,” Rise Up Sri Lanka said on its event Facebook.

“It is imperative that we make clear to those who continue to threaten and mock our democratic rights that our resolve is stronger and our numbers are greater and that we will not allow our nation to be destroyed. We will not watch silently or helplessly any longer,” organisers added.

Rise Up Sri Lanka is a citizens movement and is not affiliated with any political party. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. FORCES OPPOSED TO AUTOCRACY AND DICTATORIAL RULES MUST COME TOGETHER, MOBILIZE SUPPORT AT GRASS ROOT LEVELS, EXPLAIN THE SITUATION TO IGNORANT VILLAGE POPULATIONS, TO MAKE THEM REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM. WE CANNOT ALLOW THE WHITE CAN CULTURE, ABDUCTIONS, MURDERS, MEDIA SUPPRESSION, THUGGERY AND INTIMIDATION TO RESUME AGAIN.

  2. This is a good cause that all Sri Lankans should support.
Main-thing DO NOT vote for candidates who are corrupt, rowdy, and resort to thuggery.

My opinion is this whole lot is not fit to represent the country.

Use your vote to make a difference.

  3. Please make this as a national movement I give my full support. Our country has been ruined by the politicians . We have to re- build standards
    before anything else

  4. It is a great effort I give my full support to make this a national movement. Our country has been ruined by politicians. We have to rebuild the standards before anything else. This is the only country in the world where a prime minister who has robbed the national wealth is reappointed
to run the country by a President . This is the only country where an EX finance minister who has taken a bribe has become a deputy leader of a ruling party . We will get together for our children.

  5. jayawewa, greetings to you all.good Intention but you all cannot Change any thing .sinhaleyas are really idiots.let us make s.l. a Tamil eelam and let the s.l.an Tamils govern s.l..if the english bastards did not colonize us we would be a part of Tamil nadu and only getleman politicians like Modi, or the late Beauty queen actrees jayalalitha would govern us, instead of sirisena ,mahinda, ranil, and all These Rowdy criminell law makers.as for me, instead of demonstrating against These bastards politicians and for democrasy would have a good drink and a good f–k

    • Though I am totally against talking on ethnic lines and do not support any separatist tendencies, I understand the feelings of the minorities especially Tamils who must feel “you have your own country and do whatever you want but leave us alone, we can manage our part of the country well without you”/ Well if we go on like this without being able to put law and order with Parliamentary democracy and upholding of the judiciary, we can easily become another Syria!
