President Maithripala Sirisena met Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, United National Front representatives, the JVP and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for talks today in an attempt to end the stalemate in Parliament.
The meeting took place at the Presidential Secretariat late this evening.
United National Party (UNP) Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake said that an agrement was reached at the discussion.
The President reportedly assured at the meeting that he will address the issue in Parliament and resolve it over the next few days.
Karunanayake said the talks were held in a friendly and cordial atmosphere.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had said this morning that he has decided not to recognise the new cabinet in Parliament.
He said that he will not recognise Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister in Parliament as he lost a no-confidence vote yesterday. (Colombo Gazette)
