Mahinda to make special statement in Parliament tomorrow

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is to make a special statement in Parliament tomorrow, a day after he lost, under controversial circumstances, a no-confidence motion against him.

The no-confidence motion was signed by 122 Parliamentarians and was submitted to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today.

A vote on the no-confidence motion was taken in Parliament today and it was passed by a majority, but under controversial circumstances.

A voice vote was conducted on the no-confidence motion and not a vote by name as the Speaker said he could not hear the MPs as there was commotion in Parliament at the time.

The Government rejected the vote and the procedure followed to conduct the vote in Parliament today. (Colombo Gazette)
