The United National Party (UNP) today warned President Maithripala Sirisena against dissolving Parliament.
There is speculation the President may dissolve Parliament and go for snap elections.
Former Minister, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said that if Parliament is dissolved it will be an undemocratic act and the public will rise up against it.
“This is not just an issue involving politicians. It is an issue involving the country. If the President puts the Constitution aside and dissolves Parliament the public will protest against it,” he said.
Fonseka said that under the Constitution the President cannot dissolve Parliament until it completes its full term.
“This Government cannot be removed till it completes 4 1/2 years,” he said.
Fonseka also said that his Field Marshal post cannot be removed.
There have been reports the new Government may look to remove the post.
Fonseka said that if the President listens to some underworld member and removes his Field Marshal post, that will not be accepted locally and internationally. (Colombo Gazette)
