Police arrest asylum seekers in Eravur

The police have arrested 14 people in Eravur who were preparing to head to Australia by boat illegally, the police media unit said today. According to the police, the 14 people were staying in a house in Chenkaladi at the time of the arrest last evening. Among the 14 people preparing to make the illegal journey to Australia were women and children. The arrest came on the eve of the arrival to Sri Lanka by Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr. Ranawaka raises concerns over sanctions

Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka today raised concerns over the sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran. Ranawaka said that the sanctions will adversely affect Sri Lanka?s right to electricity, the Power and Energy ministry said. The Ministry said that Ranawaka had briefed the Ambassadors of Iran and Russia this morning regarding his concerns.

Orphaned child drowns in Wellawatte

An orphaned child fell into a canal in Wellawatte and drowned this afternoon, the police media unit said. The police said that the 9 year old boy was living at the children’s home in Dharmarama road, Wellawatte. The police identified the child as Mohommad Milnath. The Wellawatte police are conducting further investigations.
