Former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power says President Maithripala Sirisena’s “rash actions” in Sri Lanka are creating potential for destabilizing violence.
Power tweeted saying Sri Lankans are counting on leaders at home, the region and the UN to step up with urgency to resolve the crisis.
“Pres. Sirisena’s rash actions in #SriLanka are creating potential for destabilizing violence. Cannot ignore warning signs. Sri Lankans are counting on leaders at home, the region, the UN to step up with urgency to resolve crisis,” she tweeted.
She also tweeted saying “the dangers of #SriLanka constitutional crisis are clear: violence is possible & Rajapaksa’s return to power will likely end flagging efforts at ethnic reconciliation. Where is US diplomacy? SL must know suspending aid, targeted sanctions on the table”.
Power was a top member of the cabinet of former US President Barack Obama. (Colombo Gazette)
