Estate workers bring protest to Colombo

Estate workers protested in Colombo today demanding a daily wage of Rs. 1000.

The protest, which had so far been staged in the hill country, was today brought to Colombo and staged near the Presidential Secretariat.

A tense situation arose when some protesters attempted to force their way into the Presidential Secretariat.

Minister of Plantation Industries Navin Dissanayake had said over the weekend that trade unions were demanding a two-fold increase of their basic daily wage.

“The unions are asking for Rs. 1,000 as a basic wage up from the current Rs. 500, which is a two fold increase,” he said.

The Minister said that it was impossible to increase the daily wage from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 as the cost of production, the price of tea, productivity, and profitability does not justify the demand. (Colombo Gazette)
