Three elephants were killed after being hit by a train along the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa railway line last night.

The train was travelling between Batticaloa and Colombo when the elephants had been on the track.

At least three compartments of the train had derailed following the accident.

The railway track was also damaged forcing train services operating on the line to be temporarily suspended.

Last month a train transporting fuel crashed into a herd of elephants killing four elephants along the Batticaloa railway line.

The accident took place between Habarana and Palugaswewa on the Batticaloa line.

The elephants had been crossing the railway line when the train crashed into them.

The train derailed following the impact and some of the fuel tanks had overturned. (Colombo Gazette)
