Protesters in Colombo call for release of Bangladeshi activist

A group of protesters in Colombo today called for the release of Bangladeshi activist Shahidul Alam.

Local activists gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo today and staged a peaceful protest.

The protesters held placards and called for the release of internationally-renowned Bangladeshi photographer, photojournalist, and activist Shahidul Alam.

Following the protest a petition was handed over to the Bangladesh High Commission.

On August 5, 2018, Alam was arrested and detained shortly after giving an interview to Al Jazeera and posting live videos on Facebook that criticized the government’s violent response to the 2018 Bangladesh road safety protests.

Many international humanitarian organisations and news media have called for his release without charge. (Colombo Gazette)
