The Army says a discussion is ongoing to give the Army legal authority to combat the drug menace in the country.
Army Commander, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake said that the Army is already assisting the Police in the fight against drugs.
He said that the Army intelligence unit is strong and shares information with the Police on drugs related matters.
The Army Commander said that apart from the Army, the Navy and Air Force do their part to combat drug smuggling.
He said that the Army is seeking the legal authority it requires to expand its role in the fight against drugs. (Colombo Gazette)
