Former Maldives Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has questioned the failure by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to push for the release of her father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Maumoon tweeted saying she wonders why Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, who represents a Government that stands for democracy, is hesitant to call for her fathers release.
“I wonder why Hon PM
@RW_UNP representing a Government that stands for democracy and human rights is hesitant to call for the release of my father, @maumoonagayoom a founding father of SAARC who is languishing in prison!” she tweeted.
Gayoom was put in prison by the Maldives Government led by President Abdulla Yameen, who on Sunday lost the Presidential elections.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had spoken to outgoing Maldives President Abdulla Yameen and newly elected President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as well as former President Mohamed Nasheed this week.
Wickremesinghe spoke to Yameen and congratulated him on ensuring a free and fair election.
Wickremesinghe had also told Yameen he would be welcome in Sri Lanka at any time. (Colombo Gazette)
