Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed says there is a cold war taking place in the Indian ocean between India and China and countries will need to take sides.

“I am not trying to hide from these facts,” he asserted.

China is heavily involved in the Maldives and Sri Lanka while India is involved in development projects in Sri Lanka.

Nasheed feels China wants Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen to remain as President to serve its interests in the Maldives.

The Maldives will go to the polls, Sunday, to elect a new President and Yameen is contesting for the post against opposition common candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking to reporters in Colombo on Friday, Nasheed said that there is a lot of Chinese interest in the Maldives.

Nasheed said that the results of the elections is a foregone conclusion and that there is no way Yameen can win.

However he says Yameen is expected to do what it takes to hold onto power.

Nasheed urged the international community not to recognise Yameen after the Presidential elections. (Colombo Gazette)
