WPC Governor cancels purchase of expensive chairs for council

Western Province Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkara has issued an order to cancel the purchasing of a large number of expensive chairs for the Western Provincial Council (WPC).

Nanayakkara said that he had received a complaint from Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Provincial Council member Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi that the expensive chairs were to be purchased.

The Governor said that when he had made inquiries he found that there were some discrepancies.

He said the chairs were being purchased for existing members and for more members likely to be appointed later.

The Governor said that the money could be used for more important public use and so he had ordered to cancel the purchase. (Colombo Gazette)

Navy detains six Indians, including two children on a trawler

The Sri Lanka Navy says it detained six Indians, including two children who were on a trawler which entered Sri Lankan waters illegally. Sports Ministry secretary to run cricket board operations till polls

The?Sports Ministry secretary is to run the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board operations till the elections to the board takes place. Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha appointed Sports Ministry secretary H.T. Kamal Padmasiri to run the operations of the cricket board as the board elections had been postponed on a court order.
