1902

The Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith says drug traffickers must be placed on an isolated island to ensure they do not continue with their criminal activities from inside prison.

The Ministry of Health said that the Cardinal had expressed this opinion at a meeting with Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne today.

According to the Ministry of Health, the Cardinal had noted that there was a huge outcry over a recent statement he had made on the death penalty for drug traffickers.

The Cardinal said that if drug traffickers cannot be hanged they must be placed on an isolated island, the Ministry of Health said.

He said that drug traffickers cannot be controlled in normal prisons as they have inside help.

Recently Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith had been quoted as saying he supported capital punishment on drug traffickers. However he later clarified his stand.

The Pope later said that the Catholic Church must not support capital punishment. (Colombo Gazette)
