President says country suffering from damage to environment

President Maithripala Sirisena says the country is suffering as a result of the damage caused to the environment over the past few years.

The President said that Sri Lanka has reached fourth place among the world’s worst affected countries.

He said that 50 years ago Sri Lanka managed to secure the 97th place in the report but  now the destruction caused to the environment has seen the situation in Sri Lanka getting bad.

The President expressed these views while participating in the commencement of the Second Stage of the Wayamba Ela to be built at a cost of Rs.16,000 million, in Polpithigama, today (24).

After the completion of the project, it is scheduled to channel 105,000 feet acres of water of the Mahaweli River to the Northern area of the Kurunegala District annually.

The project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Sri Lankan Government. The first stage of this project is to be completed in 2019 and the second stage is scheduled to be completed in the year of 2024. (Colombo Gazette)
