Passengers protest, Army to operate buses as train strike continues

Railway passengers staged a protest today blocking the street opposite the Fort railway station as railway trade unions staged a lightning strike today.

Irate passengers also protested inside the Fort railway station this evening and damaged railway property in the process.

The Police Special Task Force was deployed to the Fort railway station to bring the situation under control.

As the strike continued, the Government decided to allow private buses to operate on any route despite the route permits issued to them, until the railway strike ends.

Railway trade unions said that they had decided to launch the strike as some of their demands had not been met.

The Government said that the Army had been deployed to operate special bus services for students sitting for the Advanced Level examination during the strike.

The Government also requested all retired railway drivers to report to the Railway Headquarters tomorrow to operate the trains during the strike. (Colombo Gazette)
