Gnanasara Thero found guilty and sentenced to jail

The?General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), the?Venerable Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero, was today sentenced to?19 years of rigorous imprisonment, to be completed within 6 years, after being found guilty in a contempt of court case.

The Attorney General?s Department had filed the case against the controversial monk.

The Appeal Court delivered the verdict on the monk who had earlier been sentenced to six months in jail for?threatening Sandya Ekneligoda, the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda within the Homagama court premises.

Lawyers have appealed against the ruling.?(Colombo Gazette)

Kabir resigns from UNP post to make way for reforms

United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Kabir Hashim has resigned from his post in the party to make way for reforms in the UNP. Hashim said that he had voluntarily submitted his resignation to the party leadership. There is speculation that former Minister?Imthiaz Bakeer Markar will be offered the post.
