The Government is considering shifting the Galle cricket stadium as there is a risk of Galle losing its UNESCO world heritage site status.
“This is sad! Galle cricket ground has a unique place in international test cricket history for its location. Also one of the most successful venues for the national team. I would like to plead and humbly request authorities and SL Government to reconsider this decision,” former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena tweeted.
Minister of Home Affairs Vajira Abeywardena said that the Galle cricket stadium will be removed by demolishing the structures around the grounds.
He said that the grounds will be later open to the public. The main issue is over the Mahinda Rajapaksa pavilion at the stadium.
The opposition says if there is an issue with the newly constructed pavilion then the authorities must demolish that and not the entire stadium. (Colombo Gazette)
