A former top cricketer has urged several cricket clubs to back Thilanga Sumathipala at the Sri Lanka Cricket board elections.
The former cricketer who is still a popular figure in Sri Lanka, has spoken to some clubs and convinced them that Sumathipala is the best option for the game in Sri Lanka.
Sumathipala is expected to win the cricket board elections and defeat rivals Nishantha Ranatunga, Jayantha Dharmadasa and Mohan de Silva to the post.
The elections have been suspended following a court order and a ruling is due on June 14.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports Faiszer Musthapa has briefed President Maithripala Sirisena on his meeting with the International Cricket Council (ICC) held this week.
Musthapa, the Competent Authority of the SLC, Kamal Pathmasiri and CEO Ashley De Silva held a meeting with the ICC on Wednesday to brief the governing body of cricket regarding the recent developments that took place in the SLC administration.
It is learnt that the President had advised the Minister to ensure elections to the cricket board take place soon. (Colombo Gazette)
