Tense situation as Maharagama UC SLPP members take oaths

A tense situation arose when six?Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna members took oaths at the Maharagama Urban Council today.

The six members, including Kanthi Kodikara, were sworn in as members of the Maharagama Urban Council, replacing the members of the Independent Group which had contested and won the local council elections.

The SLPP had extended support to the Independent Group at the last local council elections after the SLPP nominations list was rejected. (Colombo Gazette)

No traditional group photograph with the President

There was no traditional group photograph of the new cabinet with President Maithripala Sirisena today. The new cabinet took oaths before the President individually in a room at the Presidential Secretariat. The cabinet then met for a brief cabinet meeting with the President and left. In the past the President has posed with the Prime Minister and new cabinet after a new cabinet is appointed. Mano, Rishad and Malik get posts despite offering to stay out

United National Front (UNF) Parliamentarians Mano Ganesan, Rishad Bathiudeen and Malik Samarawickrema were given cabinet posts today despite offering to stay out in order to help limit the cabinet to 30 Ministers. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had this week requested the UNF for volunteers to stay out of the cabinet so others can be given posts and limit the cabinet to 30.
