NPC appeals to India, US to help create more employment in North

The Northern Provincial Council has appealed to India and the US to help create more employment opportunities in the North.

In a Resolution submitted to the NPC by NPC member M.K. Shivajilingam which was approved, the NPC has noted the need to rebuild the economy of the people in the North, improve their livelihood and increase their standard of living to be compatible with the rest of the world.

The Resolution acknowledges that to increase productivity and to stimulate economic growth, more private sector employment must be created and the private sector must be encouraged and incentivized.

The Resolution also notes that the traditional agrarian-based economy of the Tamil people is insufficient to meet the current global economic trend, and so there must be a focal shift towards knowledge-based and manufacturing economies.

The Resolution also notes that initiations must be undertaken towards setting up infrastructures to kickstart the process of building new economies for the people in the North, and conditions must be created to improve education, encourage entrepreneurship, and create high-technology employments.

The Northern Provincial Council resolved that a suitable land with the size of 10-25 acres must be allocated in the Jaffna District and all other Districts of the Province with the goal of building a Technology Park for each District.

The Council appealed to the Tamil Diaspora, and the Governments of India, the USA and other countries to assist in building the first Technology Park in Jaffna.

The Council also appealed to the Tamil Diaspora, and the Governments of India, the USA and other countries to help create more employment at the Atchuveli Industrial Estate, and also to help build two new Industrial Zones in the North-East region with the goal of creating about 100,000 advanced manufacturing employment opportunities.
