Death toll from weather rises to 11 and over 27,000 displaced

The death toll from the adverse weather rose to 11 today and over 27,000 people have been displaced, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.

The DMC said that 84,943 people (18,542 families) have been affected as of Wednesday morning. People at flood risk have been evacuated to safe locations. Approximately, 7,526 families have been evacuated into 194 welfare centres due to flood and landslide risks.

The Department of Irrigation has indicated that water levels at several major rivers were decreasing as which were at flood levels earlier.

A leak was noted on the Pulachchikulam tank in the Puttalam District and sand bags were placed to block the leak. The Vijaya Katupotha tank and Waama-Eliya tank had also been damaged due to the heavy rain. A stability issue
has been identified along the Kaduwela main bridge and the Kaduwela-Biyagama road has been temporarily closed.

The Government has allocated Rs. 14.7 million to the 12 Districts affected by the weather to address the immediate needs of the affected population.

The DMC said that as per the immediate rapid impact analysis estimates, 23,000 people need emergency flood relief and early recovery assistance. (Colombo Gazette)
