Former Prisons Commissioner and IP further remanded

Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa and Inspector of Police (IP) Neomal Rangajeewa were today ordered to be further remanded in connection to the Welikada prison riot.

Emil Ranjan and?Neomal Rangajeewa were produced before the?Colombo Magistrate?s Court who ordered that they be further remanded?until May 8.

Emil Ranjan and?Neomal Rangajeewa had been arrested over the 2012 Welikada Prison clashes in which several inmates were killed.

Investigators are attempting to uncover who gave orders to kill the inmates during the riot. (Colombo Gazette)

China to donate another 500,000 doses of vaccines to Sri Lanka

China has announced it will donate another 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine to Sri Lanka. The Chinese Embassy in Colombo tweeted that the vaccine doses will be dispatched within the next month. It further said the donation is being made to support the Sri Lankan people currently fighting the third wave of the coronavirus. All arrivals in Sri Lanka suspended from 21-31 May

All passenger arrivals into Sri Lanka have been suspended from the 21st -31st May. The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) announced that passenger arrivals will be suspended from midnight on 21 May to midnight on 31 May. The CAASL said, however, passengers who wish to leave the country will be permitted to do so during this period. The Authority further said the ban will be enforced due to the current coronavirus situation in the country. (Colombo Gazette)
