NPC members in Geneva to seek pressure on Sri Lanka

Northern Provincial Council (NPC) members are in Geneva to seek pressure on Sri Lanka to deliver on its promises.

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran said that NPC members M.K. Sivajilingham and Anandi Saseetharan, wife of former LTTE Trincomalee District political head S. Elilan, are currently in Geneva.

Wigneswaran said that he was unable to travel to Geneva owing to other commitments but the two NPC members will ensure the NPC position on the human rights issue is conveyed to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The UNHRC is currently meeting in Geneva with Sri Lanka set to be discussed later this week and next week.

The NPC members are to push the Council to ensure Sri Lanka sticks to its commitments on the human rights issue including transitional justice.

Sivajilingham and Anandi Saseetharan are to speak at the UNHRC during the ongoing 37th session as well as at side events.?(Colombo Gazette)

Angunukolapelessa prison inmates protest

Several inmates of the Angunukolapelessa prison staged a protest on a tower in the prison today. Remand prisoners of the Angunukolapelessa prison launched the protest objecting to search operations being conducted in the new prison. The Special Task Force had launched search operations in the prison. Security has been tightened in the prison following the protest. (Colombo Gazette)

Uber and Pick Me drivers protest, some drivers threatened

Several?Uber and Pick Me drivers staged a protest in Colombo today over the commission charged by the respective companies from them. The protesting drivers also threatened some Uber and Pick Me drivers who operated their vehicles without joining the strike. Uber drivers parked their cars along Green Path and staged a protest walk to the Uber office. The protesters said that they were suffering as a result of the high commission charged by the companies, particularly Uber, for each taxi hire.
