US urges Sri Lanka to swiftly conclude state of emergency

The United States (US) today urged?Sri Lanka to swiftly conclude the state of emergency which was enforced today.

The US Embassy in Sri Lanka said it is important that the Government of Sri Lanka act quickly against perpetrators of sectarian violence,

“Rule of law, human rights, and equality are essential for peaceful coexistence. It is important that the Government of Sri Lanka act quickly against perpetrators of sectarian violence, protect religious minorities and their places of worship, and conclude the State of Emergency swiftly, while protecting human rights and basic freedoms for all,” the US Embassy said.

President Maithripala Sirisena?promulgated a state of emergency to redress the situation in the country. (Colombo Gazette)

Over 60 suspects including women arrested over various crimes

Over 60 suspects have been arrested in connection to various crimes during a 24 hour special operation conducted in the Western Province over the weekend. Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Deshabandu Tennakooon told the Colombo Gazette that 62 suspects were arrested relating to 70 cases. Digamadulla expected to be a ‘hot spot’ during campaigning

At least three towns in Digamadulla are expected to be ‘hot spots’ during campaigning for the 5th August Parliamentary election, election observers said today.
