Criminal Procedure Code to be amended for safety of detainees

Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend the Criminal Procedure Code for the safety of detainees.
Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorala had sought approval for the amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code Act No. 15 of 1979 in order to remove the requirement of presenting a suspect or accused before a court in identified, determined situations.
In her proposal the Justice Minister noted that any suspect who is arrested should be presented before a Magistrate within 24 hours and in case of remanding they should be present once in two weeks to extend the remand order.
Hence for the security of detainees it was decided to amend the Act to make provisions to obtain a remand order without presenting detainees before a Magistrate. (Colombo Gazette)
