Influential Buddhist council says no to new Constitution

An influential Buddhist council has decided to oppose a new Constitution for Sri Lanka saying there was no requirement for a new?Constitution.

The Joint Sangha Council of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters of the Siam Sect reached this decision following a meeting held in Kandy today.

Members of the council said that they feel the new Constitution is detrimental as it looks at devolution of powers.

The monks said that they also feel the Executive powers of the President must remain.

The?Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters said that the country is already seeing a division as a result of the attempt to draft a new Constitution. (Colombo Gazette)

Nude motorcyclist arrested heading to Kandy from Colombo

A nude motorcyclist has been arrested heading to Kandy from Colombo, the Sri Lanka Police said. Ther motorcyclist was arrested after he rode his motorcycle from Nugegoda and managed to escape at least one previous attempt to arrest him. The 24-year-old man was captured on video riding the motorcycle without any clothes. An attempt to arrest him in Kegalle failed but he was eventually arrested in Kadugannawa. Local Government elections announced in Sri Lanka

Local Government elections have been announced in Sri Lanka with nominations to be accepted from 17 March to 20 March 2025. The Elections Commission announced the accepting of nominations for the polls to elect new Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairpersons, Deputy Chairpersons, and members for 336 local government institutions in Sri Lanka. Elections will be held for?28 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils and 272 Pradeshiya Sabhas. The Elections Commission will announce the date for the elections

Railway officials under fire over failure to use GPS technology

Sri Lanka’s Railway Department has come under fire over its failure to use GPS technology to mitigate accidents involving trains and elephants. Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Bimal Rathnayake headed a discussion of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation. The Committee Chair expressed his concerns over the failure by the railway department to address the harm caused to elephants, despite the availability of technology.
