President confronts protesters in Jaffna, Sivaji, Suresh demand action

President Maithripala Sirisena confronted protesters in Jaffna who were demanding that Tamil political prisoners be released.

The protesters staged a black flag protest along the street used by the President’s convoy during his visit to Jaffna today.

Tamil National Alliance members M. K. Sivajilingam and Suresh Premachandran were among those who took part in the protest.

President Maithripala Sirisena got down from his vehicle and attempted to calm the protesters.

However Sivajilingam and Premachandran slammed the President over his failure to release the?Tamil political prisoners.

Sivajilingam told the President that he has the authority to take action and secure the release of the prisoners.

As the situation got tensed the President left and the Police placed a barricade preventing the protesters from getting close to the President. (Colombo Gazette)

Muzammil sworn in as Western Province Governor

Former Colombo Mayor A. J. M. Muzammil was sworn in as the new Governor of the Western Province today. He took oaths before President Maithripala Sirisena. Muzammil replaces Azath Salley who resigned from the post yesterday. (Colombo Gazette)

Police gives ethnic breakdown of recent arrests

The Police today took an unusual step of announcing the ethnicity of several suspects arrested following the Easter Sunday attacks. Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said that over 2000 suspects were arrested over the Easter Sunday attacks, search operations and mob violence which followed. He said that 2289 people were arrested and among them are 330 Sinhalese, 139 Tamils and 1820 Muslims. The Police spokesman said that of those arrested, 423 suspects have been remanded.
