Court orders DNA test on suspect in rape of three girls

The Muttur Magistrate today ordered a DNA test to be carried out on the main suspect in the rape of three girls.

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) had sought approval for the DNA test to be carried out on the suspect over the May 2017 rape incident.

The?NCPA says it had received a complaint to the effect that the investigation by the Police was not being conducted properly.

Appearing in the case today the NCPA informed court it was investigating the complaint and sought court approval for the DNA test.

The?NCPA had also sought approval to record video statements from the three victims and the court granted approval.

The?Muttur Magistrate ordered the CID to take over the investigations from the?Muttur Police.

The case is to be heard again in September. (Colombo Gazette)

Court refuses to free Basil on bail

The Kaduwela Magistrate today refused to free former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on bail and further remanded him. Rajapaksa had submitted an application through his lawyers seeking bail. However when he was presented in court today the application was rejected and he was further remanded. Low level delegation for June session

The Government will not be sending a high level delegation for the June session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
