Tissa says he never left UNP, says he is still a member

27 Apr, 2017

Former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Tissa Attanayake says he never left the party and that he is still a member of the party.

Attanayake said that he decided not to support Maithripala Sirisena at the last Presidential election as the UNP had not put forward its own candidate.

Attanayake supported Mahinda Rajapaksa at the last election and took a break from politics after Rajapaksa lost the election.

He says he has now been informally invited to return to UNP politics and he will decide on his move if he is formally invited.

“At the last Presidential election I did not agree on?supporting Maithripala Sirisena. My stand was that the candidate must be from the UNP. I always worked hard for the UNP,” he said.

Attanayake said that if the UNP is to win the 2020 election it must be prepared to first make some key changes.

He also said that those who worked hard for the party must not be forgotten. (Colombo Gazette)
