Government wants to first ascertain who are missing

The Government says it wants to first ascertain who are missing and the Missing Persons Office will help in this process.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe informed Parliament that?the Government needs to see if some of those reported missing have gone overseas illegally.

He said that even recently there were reports of several people attempting to travel overseas illegally by boat, some for economic reasons.

The Prime Minister said that once the Missing Persons Office is established a clear picture will emerge on the exact number of those missing.

He said the delay to establish the?Missing Persons Office was since some amendments put forward by the JVP was not included.

The Prime Minister said that the amendments have now been gazetted and it will be put to Parliament to be approved.

Wickremesinghe was responding to a question posed by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).?(Colombo Gazette)

Multiple shooting incidents results in deaths and injuries

Multiple shooting incidents were reported in different parts of the country today resulting in at least two deaths. The Police said that one individual was killed following a shooting incident in Uragasmandhandiya in Elpitiya. The shooting incident took place this evening and investigations are underway. Interim budget to be presented to Parliament next week

An interim budget is to be presented to Parliament next week by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is also the Minister of Finance. The interim budget will be presented to Parliament on 30th August.
