Five policemen arrested over death of suspect in custody

Five policemen were arrested today over the death of a suspect in the custody of the Peliyagoda police.

Among those arrested was a Sub Inspector (SI), the police media unit said.

According to reports the police arrested the 41-year-old suspect in Nawagamuwa for having in his possession an illegal weapon, and had detained him at the Peliyagoda Police station.

A father of two, the suspect, a resident of Biyagama, had died after being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital after falling ill while he was being escorted to locate a hidden weapon. The man was charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

A?post-mortem examination determined that the suspect died from dehydration or internal bleeding. (Colombo Gazette)

Guidelines are being prepared to enforce once the quarantine curfew is lifted, Army Commander, General Shavendra Silva said today.
