Government looking for win-win deal with China

16 Feb, 2017

The Government says it is looking for a win-win deal with China on investments to the country.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake told reporters that the Chinese government feels Sri Lanka is giving a positive response to its requirements.

“The Chinese government feels we are genuinely responding to their requirement. As a result we are giving the answers to their pro-active response,” he said.

He said that positive discussions are still ongoing on investing in the southern Hambantota city and both countries are looking for a win-win agreement.

China is looking at operating a Chinese built port in Hambantota and also an investment zone in the area.

“The Hambantota port is an ongoing discussion,” the Finance Minister said.

Sri Lanka has invited investments from China and other countries in order to boost the local economy.

Karunanayake said that Sri Lanka’s economy has moved to stable from negative and achieving that was not an easy task.

He said that at a time when the world economy is unstable Sri Lanka has been given a stable outlook by international ratings agencies. (Colombo Gazette)
