Cold Theatre 7 brings the magic of Peter Pan to life
St. Joseph’s College, in collaboration with Cold Theatre 7 featuring St. Bridget’s Convent, proudly presents Peter Pan – The Musical; a timeless, magical experience that will have you hooked and make you never want to grow up.
Directed by Kevin Cruze with music directed by Geethika Cooray, the journey will set a course to the second star to the right with the company of alternative casts, from the 12th – 18th of December at 7.30pm (and matinees at 3pm over the weekend) at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
Kevin Cruze has a clear vision as to what he would like to do and the initial team behind Cold Theatre 7 that came together to achieve his vision was a group of individuals who have excelled in drama in the past decade at St. Joseph’s College.
He refers to this group as the ‘Cream Of the Last Decade’ (in St. Joseph’s College). This became the hidden name for the theatre company – “Cold”.
The word “Theatre’ is also something that none of the current mainstream theatre troupes in Sri Lanka use in their respective names. So that was the second piece in the puzzle, “Cold Theatre”.
He chose number ‘7’ to be a part of the name as there were 7 individuals who helped Kevin in theatre ever since he was a kid; there were 7 individuals who started off this theatre group; and Kevin has featured in the prestigious All Island Shakespeare finals 7 times (prior to 2013). Pieces of the puzzle were put together and “Cold Theatre 7” was born.
Peter Pan is a musical adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan and Barrie’s own novelization of it, Peter and Wendy. The music is mostly by Mark “Moose” Charlap, with additional music by Jule Styne, and most of the lyrics were written by Carolyn Leigh, with additional lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
The original 1954 Broadway production, starring Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook, earned Tony Awards for both stars. It was followed by NBC telecasts of it in 1955, 1956, and 1960 with the same stars, plus several rebroadcasts of the 1960 telecast. In 2014, the musical was broadcast on NBC featuring several new numbers, and starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken. The show has enjoyed several revivals onstage.
