NCPA official accused of abusing a young boy

An official at the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has been accused of abusing a young boy.

Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs?Chandrani Bandara told the Colombo Gazette she has ordered a full investigation into the alleged incident.

A complaint over the abuse of the young boy from Kurunegala was made over the NCPA complaints hotline.

Sources said there was an attempt to suppress the complaint since it involved an official from the NCPA.

However Minister Chandrani Bandara insisted that she is closely following the investigations and that she had sought a report on the investigations today.

The Minister said she has called for an independent investigation and her instructions have been communicated to the NCPA through her secretary. (Colombo Gazette)

Would-be asylum seekers arrested

Another group of would-be illegal asylum seekers were arrested Matara last night as they were preparing to head to Australia by boat. The police said that 39 people were arrested from a house from where they were to later make their journey by boat. Among them were 18 men, seven women and 14 children, the police media unit said today. Those arrested are residents of Jaffna, Batticaloa and Trincomalee. They are to be produced in court today. Deadly wasp attack in Norwood

One person was killed and four others were injured following a wasp attack in Norwood today. The police said that the wasps attacked five people including 3 women working at an estate in the area. All those who were injured in the attack were rushed to hospital, the police said. However one man had succumbed to his injuries on admission to hospital. The victim was was said to be a 65 year old man. The police are investigating the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
