TNA welcomes offer to rehabilitate 23 political prisoners

jailThe Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has welcomed the announcement by the Government that a further twenty-three political prisoners will be released through the process of rehabilitation.

The TNA says the move is in keeping with the promise given to the Leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan and TNA Jaffna District Parliamentarian and spokesperson M.A. Sumanthiran at a meeting held at Temple Trees on the August 26, 2016 with Minister of Justice Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, Minister of Law and Order Sagala Rathnayaka, the Attorney General and other High Officials.

“We urge the Government to continue this process of re-evaluation and release the rest of the political prisoners also without delay,” the TNA said in a statement.

The Ministry of Resettlement and Rehabilitation said this week that the rehabilitation offer is being made to 23 of 96 suspects arrested over alleged links to the LTTE.

The Minister of Rehabilitation D.M. Swaminathan has spoken to the Attorney General to amend the indictments of 23 of the suspects.

The 23 pending cases and trials under the PTA that are before the High Court will be considered by the Attorney General’s Department, to facilitate a plea.

“The plea would be facilitated if the suspects are willing to commit to the six month rehabilitation programme carried out by the Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation,” a spokesperson said.

The Ministry of Resettlement and Rehabilitation said the 23 suspects who will be offered rehabilitation had been arrested for minor offences. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. These are not political prisoners. Someone like Sarath Fonseka can be termed as a political prisoner.
These are hardcore LTTErs who previous govt. had to prosecute after releasing 11,000 others.
