Modi, Sirisena note the need to end scourge of terrorism

President Maithripala Sirisena telephoned Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today to condole over the terror attack in Uri, Jammu and?Kashmir.

President Sirisena strongly condemned the cross-border terrorist attack and offered condolences to the families of the victims, the Indian Prime Minister’s office said.

The leaders spoke of the need for sustained cooperation among countries of the region to end the scourge of terrorism in the region. (Colombo Gazette)

Navy arrests 18 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 18 Indian fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters in the North. The Navy media unit said that the Indians were arrested?16 nautical miles west of lighthouse-Point Pedro during a Naval patrol. Three (03) dhows used by the Indians had also been taken into custody. The Indian fishers and dhows were brought to SLNS Uthtara in Jaffna and were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Jaffna for onward legal action. (Colombo Gazette)

Four suspects deported from Dubai released

Four suspects who were arrested in Dubai and deported were released after being questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The four were among several Sri Lankans arrested at a hotel in Dubai with notorious underworld leader Makandure Madush. They were deported to Sri Lanka and were detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday with actor Ryan Van Rooyen.
