Court issues order to exhume Lasantha’s body

The Mount Lavinia Magistrate today issued an order to exhume the body of late journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga.

The order was issued following a request put forward by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The court ordered that the body be exhumed on September 27 in the presence of a Magistrate.

The CID had sought a court order to exhume the body to further investigate his murder.

The CID also sought a court order to record a statement from former police DIG?Vass Gunawardena over the murder.

The Magistrate ordered the Department of Prisons to allow the CID to record the?statement from?Gunawardena who is in remand custody.

Wickremetunga was killed in January 2009 while he was on his way to office in Ratmalana.?Wickremetunga was the founding Editor of The Sunday Leader newspaper. (Colombo Gazette)
