Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs D.M. Swaminathan said that there are 31 welfare camps, situated in the seven Divisional Secretariats of the Jaffna District.
In those camps there are 936 families consisting of 3260 members, the Minister said in response to a question raised.
He said his Ministry allocates funds annually to provide sanitation, electricity, drinking water and garbage cleaning facilities to the welfare camps and implements them through the Divisional Secretariats.
A sum of Rs.3,798,867 had been allocated for 2016 to provide drinking water, sanitation and electricity facilities to the welfare camps.
The Minister also said that lands of 254 families out of 936 families who are living in the welfare camps, is being occupied by the state forces and these lands have not been released yet.
He said 682 Families out of 936 Families do not own lands or houses. Action is being taken to provide land with housing facilities to these landless families in the welfare camps. (Colombo Gazette)
