Six former army corporals acquitted over murder of 24 Tamils

Six former army corporals were acquitted today by the Anuradhapura court over the murder of 24 Tamil civilians in Kumarapuram in 1996.

A group of soldiers ran berserk on the evening of 11th February 1996 on receipt of information that two soldiers were found dead with gunshot injuries at the 58th milepost junction on the Killiveddy-Muttur road, which leads to the Kumarapuram village, located half a mile from the scene.

It was reported at the time that the soldiers started killing civilians and beat many of the villagers injuring several seriously.

Several?men, women and children were killed and?six soldiers were later arrested over the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
