Court rejects request to issue arrest warrant on Udayanga

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s court today rejected a request to issue a warrant for the arrest of Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.

The police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) had made the request to the Fort Magistrate.

The arrest was sought as part of investigations over the purchase of MIG-27 aircraft in a controversial deal known as the ‘MIG deal’.

Udayanga Weeratunga was Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Russia when Mahinda Rajapaksa was President.

Since last year?Weeratunga claimed he was living in Ukraine and refused to return to Sri Lanka.?(Colombo Gazette)
