There are no reports of Sri Lankans in Turkey being affected by the attempted coup last night, the Foreign Ministry said.
The Ministry said that the Sri Lankan Embassy in Turkey is in touch with the relevant officials to gather information on the safety of the Sri Lankan community in Turkey.
Meanwhile the Turkish Embassy in Colombo said that the situation which unfolded in Turkey was a coup attempt to overthrow the democratically-elected Government.
The Embassy said the coup attempt was foiled by the Turkish people in unity and solidarity.
“Our President and Government are in charge. Turkish Armed Forces were not involved in the coup attempt in its entirety. It was conducted by a clique within the Armed Forces and received a well-deserved response from our nation,” the Embassy said. (Colombo Gazette)
