Welikada remand prison to be shifted to land near Supreme Court

The?Welikada remand prison is to be shifted to land located near the near Supreme Court complex in Colombo.

The Welikada prison complex comprises four sections, and a proposal made by the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka, to acquire the land belonging to B.C.C Lanka Company near the Supreme Court complex to construct the remand prison was approved by cabinet, the Government said today.

Suspects who are to be produced before court after being arrested in Colombo are detained at the Welikada remand prison.

Most prisons in Sri Lanka are located in key?towns and on?land with high economic value.

The current?Government, under the program of relocating prisons in the country, has decided to relocate the Welikada prison and its sub sections. (Colombo Gazette)
